Cades Cove Loop Road:
This 11-mile one way road, is a popular tourist bicycling area. It provides bicyclists with excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and touring of 19th century homesites.
Beginning the second week in May, the loop road is closed to motor vehicle traffic on Wednesday and Saturday mornings until 10:00 a.m. to allow bicyclists and pedestrians to enjoy the cove. This closure continues through the second-to-last Saturday in September.
Bicycles may be rented in the summer and fall, at the Cades Cove store (located near Cades Cove Campground). For information call (865) 448-9034.
Townsend Bicycle Trail
This bike trail is located in Townsend Tennessee, the Peaceful side of the Smokies, and is approximately 9 miles long with 3 underpasses. It features good paved trails with short easy hills and is great for cyclists of all levels including older children. It runs parallel to Hwy. US 321 in Townsend, with road signs denoting the beginning and end. The Townsend Visitors Center is also located along the trail and is great for finding area information. You'll see lots of scenic beauty of the area; and a portion runs along the river. The bike trail provides access to restaurants, shops, motels along the way. Parking is available at both ends of bike trail located on US 321 in Townsend
Bicycles can travel on most roads within the National Park. However, due to heavy automobile traffic, steep terrains, and narrow roads with very limited pull-off areas, it is advisable that only experienced riders using extreme caution navigate them, as many park roads are not well suited for safe and enjoyable bicycle riding.

Other areas suitable for bicyclists include the Foothills Parkway just outside Maryville, Tennessee. The side going toward Pigeon Forge has some unfinished sections of roadway and offers limited vehicle traffic, while the other side offers some splendid mountain views and is not as heavily traveled by motorists as the roads in the National Park. Cyclists may also ride the Greenbrier and Tremont roads in Tennessee, and if vacationing in North Carolina try Lakeview Drive, and Cataloochee Valley.
Please obey all traffic regulations when bicycling in the Smokies. Safety is always a major concern where cars and bicycles must share the road, especially when cycling our mountaineous areas. The State of Tennessee requires that children age 16 and under wear a helmet. We strongly recommend that all riders wear helmets, use rear view mirrors, and ride properly fitted and well-maintained bicycles.
There are no mountain biking trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Gatlinburg Trail, the Oconaluftee River Trail, and the lower Deep Creek Trail are the only park trails on which bicycles are allowed. Bicycles are prohibited on all other park trails.
